Every now and then I read a book that catches me by surprise. Expecting a haunted house story, I instead discovered a tale about the human struggle to find our place in this world. This story is told from multiple points of view which makes it fun and easy to understand.
The story centers around an old Victorian house in Olalla, on the Dark Passage of the Puget Sound.
Bill has come to Olalla looking for inspiration about a book. He is drawn to an estate sale at the house and, for reasons unknown to him, he feels compelled to buy it. it has a sense of familiarity to him. Before he can finish renovations, he has an accident. While in a coma he sees a woman in a tunnel beckoning to him.
Desperate to escape the frequent, violent attacks of her abusive husband, Jen accepts an offer from her friend Peter to rent the house. The man in her dreams, the one she loves in this other reality, has given her the confidence and strength to take her life back. She senses something other-worldly about the house but is unsure if it is evil or good. There is something or someone watching her.
Strange forces have brought Bill and Jen together in their dreams, strengthening their bond as they slowly come to understand what the old house is and what their place is in the coming events.
There are many characters that have important roles in this story of darkness and light.
Bill's cousin Lisa has been corrupted by something evil and commits unspeakable acts in her hunt for fortune. You will loathe her.
David is ensnared by Lisa's manipulations and blindly follows her wishes, ignoring an inner voice that warns him not to.
Jen's best friend Ivy gets pulled into the mystery of the house and discovers that she has an important part to play in the times ahead. She really endeared herself to me. Her guilt over the deaths of her brother and sister led her to choose all the wrong men.
Peter has been Bill's friend since childhood and becomes his guardian while he is in a coma. He begins to receive messages from Bill, but that can't be possible. Bill is still in a coma.
John's life spins out of control after Jen ends their marriage and, in his madness, dark forces are able to use him for their own purposes.
I could write so much more about this book but then I would be telling you too much. Now that the stage has been set and I have come to know the characters, I am ready to dive into Guardians, the second book. Due to be released soon, you can read a little bit about it at the end of Dark Passage. I am now hooked and the author has reeled me in.

Dark Passage is a gripping story and I finished it in one day! The story felt magnetic and I could not stop reading it! It is told from several different point of views and that was confusing to me at first, because I didn't know we had changed to a different character's POV. For future books, I think putting the character's name at the top of the page would help clear up that confusion. I really appreciated the different views from each character though, it really helped to round out the story.

Dark Passage is ultimately about good versus evil. A great battle is looming between the two sides. Which side will each character choose? This gripping story will have you uptight and maybe a bit anxious, until you finish the book! Will Jen be united with her soul mate and will good ultimately win over evil? The dark parts of this book were a bit dark for my taste. Reading about certain ritual sacrifices for the evil side were hard for me to stomach. However, they were not too descriptive, I am just more sensitive to violence than some people. That said, I was totally dumbfounded when the author dropped the "f-bomb" in the middle of the book. I felt it was completely out of place and not necessary to the story. For a book that discusses angels, God and the ultimate good, it seemed uncalled for. For those reasons I gave it four stars out of five. An overall great read, Dark Passage will not disappoint! I am anxious to see how things work out in the next book in the series!

UPDATE Since posting my review the author has contacted me and informed me that the "f-bomb" has been taken out of both the version and the newest paperback version of the book!

There are several things wrong with this book. The most obvious is the typos. These typos go beyond the norm. It isn't just the occasional misspelling here and there. I don't think there is one page in this book that doesn't have a typo. Numerous times there are back slashes, numbers, using the wrong pronoun, words smashed together, and extra periods. There are some mistakes in the book that one might call a typo, but I think it is just sloppy writing or lack of editing. At one point in the story they are talking about the character Bill, but put the name Peter in it's place, and I know it is meant to be Bill because the paragraph before and after use his name. Another "typo" in the book are points where the writer has started a sentence and it's as if they have changed their mind mid-sentence and decide to rephrase what they want to say, but they never completely deleted the original sentence.

There are also issues with continuity in the book. I think the manner in which the story is written may have been too difficult for the writer. They tell the story though many characters points of view, so the story ends up jumping back and forth from character to character. One continuity issue would be one of the most pivotal scenes in the book when the main character falls and ends up in a coma. In one telling of the scene Peter shows up with emergency vehicles already there, and in the next he shows up and calls the emergency vehicles to the scene.

Another issue I had with this book is the elaborate actions taken throughout the story that by the end of the book all seemed completely unnecessary, and the issues that the characters were dealing with could easily have been dealt with.

In the end I would have to say that this book lacked a clear view or plot line. It seems as if it was hastily written based on the issues sited above. It looks as if the writer didn't even have an editor look at it before publishing. If this was written by someone attending college it would get a zero grade.
