Second Street Station A Mary Handley Mystery Lawrence H Levy Books
I enjoyed reading this and learning about that era of NYC. The characters are well thought out. But, at some point, I asked myself what detective work she did to find the killer. She was sent on a wild goose chase and found herself near Kate/Lizzie's hometown. After seeing a photo and talking to Mrs. King, she knew who killed Charlie. There were no clues the reader could follow and I wonder if she would have figured out who the murderer was without that bit of luck. Yes, other detectives get lucky, because they are following leads and manage to find the one person/thing that connects the dots. There were no dots for Mary or the reader to connect.Tags : Amazon.com: Second Street Station: A Mary Handley Mystery (9780553418927): Lawrence H. Levy: Books,Lawrence H. Second Street Station A Mary Handley Mystery Lawrence H Levy Books Reviews
I share the same name as the author, though I know of no relationship.
It's an OK read, not great. The story requires too much in belief from the reader, and I'm not sure that I would have finished a book written by someone with a different name.
I DO NOT recommend reading based on the author sharing your name unless you are Philip Roth or Irwin Shaw.
This was a very good book, very true to life, without any elaborate details. It is Mary's hard life as she becomes the first woman detective at the Second Street Station in Baltimore. It is a mystery but that is not the crux of the story. This is Mary's story and she lived it when women were put down, ridiculed and expected to marry and raise children, not comb the city streets trying to identify a killer. Well - written and interesting.
Mary lives in a time when women were rarely seen in certain professions, especially as detectives. She is determined to be involved in the hunt for her friend's fiancé's murder, despite the indignities thrown at her from certain members of the police force and the attempts to get her physically removed from the case. These attempts come from the lowest of the low to those held high up on pedestals, admired by the world. What you find out about these people will certainly change your opinion about them. Lawrence H. Levy draws you in with action, twists and turns in the plot, and believable characters. Now I want to read more Mary Handley mysteries.
The idea of a female detective on the streets of New York in the nineteenth century drew me to this series. Discovering that it weaved actual historical figures and events into the story was a bonus. It took some time to adjust between the lighter, humorous scenes with Mary to the dark and violent scenes of the killer (and other nefarious individuals), but once I got into the story, I found this less jarring. I loved Mary and her spunky personality, and I was more than happy to suspend disbelief to be in her world. I look forward to reading more books in the series.
A very colorful, well-written story, filled with action, suspense, humor, and intriguing, complex characters, each with well-delineated goals and motivation. It's backdrop is the late 1800s, America's Guilded Age, a time when the poor immigrants and factory workers of the growing cities spawned a class of wealthy industrialists, successful entrepreneurs, inventors, corrupt politicians, and the thugs who did their dirty work. These are the characters who populate this book and with whom Mary Handley, a brilliant and independent female who handles the oppression she encounters with steely determination and humor, has to deal. Given an opportunity to fulfill her lifelong dream of solving crimes, she confronts the dark side of, and matches wits with, some of the most powerful and well known men of the time (as well as with a few powerful women, not the least of which is her mother!). The courage, intelligence and resourcefulness with which she ccomplishes this is fascinating. Having read that this was a first novel, I was amazed at the writer's skill. I then found out that Lawrence H. Levy had been a successful writer for TV series such as "Seinfeld." Nevertheless. I am still impressed and have already ordered his next Mary Handley book, due out on 1/19/16.
Mary was always a very smart little girl despite her mother’s objections, wishing that she would just conform. In 1888, girls were discouraged from pursuing work, let alone working as a detective, but Mary learned to fight and shoot, and read everything she could get her hands on. She uses her brain to solve crimes even though she had to fight her family, other police, and mostly just men in general. To dismiss her and make her look bad, the police assign her to find a murderer. Their goal was to nip her ambition and the other women encouraged by her, but she takes the case.
This was a first of 2 novels. The author uses real people and crimes for this piece of fiction. I felt it was a bit repetitious at times. The main character is interesting and likable, but a bit too good to be true at times. I felt some of the crimes were disconnected in some ways. I wished that the author had used them to relate to the current crime. Also, the heroine doesn't find the killer using her detective skills. It's a coincidence and not everything gets tied up at the end. I felt a little let down. It is a good quick read. I do recommend his second book Brooklyn on Fire with the same heroine.
