I purchased this book because I read that the author's superhero-loving daughter was her inspiration for creating the character and writing the series. I wanted a 5☆ reaction because I think it's laudible to offer YA books with non-white, non-male main characters. But I end up with mixed reactions.

The 6-Clans premise is intriguing if a bit underdeveloped, but I'll assume the underlying details will flesh out as the series continues. The teens all seem wonderfully normal and realistic (other than the paranormal abilities, of course!), and the adults seem well conceived as well. I loved the everyday interactions, and Chassie's reactions to her unexpected developing powers rang true. I even get her rage upon learning of her mother's murder.

Now, the troubling part. ~Spoiler Alert~ While I found the torture scene reprehensible (and take off ½☆ for younger readers), I can accept that it makes vengeful sense given Chausiku's unmitigated anger; what makes no sense is that when the adults tell her to stop, she just does. And then they all just let him go. REALLY? Sure, it's a series and the sequel will resolve the matter, but there are other ways to continue the saga ~More Spoiler Alert~ by just letting Eito track her down; we can assume he's been prepped....

And a special note to the author: I wish you would take the proofing criticisms seriously – and take corrective action. (It's not hard to upload corrected Kindle or POD copy.) Based on book 1, this series has the makings for a classic multi-ethnic YA paranormal series, and you should honor it and your readers with clean copy.

Exciting plot. Worth reading, but the numerous typos and grammatical errors detracted from my enjoyment. It badly needed a better proof reader.
It's a great read for a teenager. Very suspenseful throughout the whole book. The plot was well developed with the characters dialect being realistic of today's youth. It would make a great gift for a teenager to add to their reading collection. Loved it!!!!
My absolute fav fav favorite part is the torture scene at the end, I was wondering will the power corrupt her but I was SO sure john wouldn't let it the entire book was just really fun to read
I'm not sure what I expected, but I really enjoyed this book. The characters are diverse & well drawn, the plot, while outrageous, is handled well enough to be believable. The teenage heroine will appeal to all ages with the right amount of teenage angst & supernatural powers. All in all a, good read.
I loved reading about this young girl and the way her life played out when she became 16 years old. A fantasy and love story combined with lots of scrapping with the bad guys mixed in. What more can you ask for? I loved it.
I have this book 5 stars because it is so good that anyone over the age of 14 should read it. However, there was a few mistakes within the book. Nevertheless, I would recommend this book to everyone I thought would enjoy this book. Now, I wish the next book was out so I know what happens next. Some questions that come to mind are, Will she and her relationship with John? Will she meet the rest of her family? And last but not least, Will she know the true nature of Eito and destroy him?
I won this book in a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

I was confused when I first started reading but everything became quite clear fairly quickly. I liked the authors writing style and her character development. I’m a sucker for a good supernatural read. I did find it to get dark which is nice for a little older audience of the young adult genre. Overall I was impressed and look forward to reading more in the series.
