"A captivating tale about a charming tortoise" - Kirkus Reviews

Buddy Comes to Breakfast tells the true story of the author’s visit to Nevada, where she is introduced to an adopted Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) named Buddy, who lives in a friend’s back yard. An original, easy-to-learn poem runs through every beautifully illustrated page of the book, making this an inviting literary experience for younger children. For middle-school ages and above, the story line teaches about Buddy and his habits. Through the author’s watercolor sketches and paintings, as well as photographs of Buddy, readers are drawn in to the story of this friendly, gentle creature. Also included are a glossary of important words to know and lists of websites for more information about the Desert Tortoise, which has been on the Federal Endangered Species list as “threatened” for more than a decade.

Recently, I was given a copy of this beautifully illustrated book as a gift, since I am a 'custodian' of a desert tortoise. (In Nevada, you don’t 'own' a tortoise like you would a dog or cat. Even captive tortoises belong to the state as they are all considered wildlife.) This book warmed my heart and brought a smile to my face with hopes that others will see this special animal as an option for a low maintenance pet. He doesn't need to be walked or groomed among other advantages you'll learn about in the book.

Tortoises have wonderful personalities, and when they look at you and scurry to meet you, you understand this unique family member loves you and relies on you for help with food, water, and shelter, the theme of the book. My tortoise thinks he’s a cat and follows the cats in the house whenever the door is open.

I recently gave a presentation at work on the advantages of adopting a desert tortoise. This drew interest in the ‘Buddy book’ and possibly a few more adoptions by fellow employees. Not only is this book a beautiful educational gift for a child (or adult), it’s the perfect book to take to school for Nevada Reading Week.

I want to wish the author the best of luck with the book. Thanks for helping to educate, using Buddy's story, and taking one pet tortoise to celebrity status! I hope this inspires others to consider giving a tortoise a helping hand.

This book is based on a 45-year relationship (I thought at the time she wrote it was a friendship) the author had with me and my pets, which she abruptly ended 9 days before she published it. I thought at first it was just a BFF disagreement, but I understand now what it really was after her 3 summers visits. It wasn’t me she was coming to see, it was Buddy! She was just using me and my house while she photographed, painted, and learned everything she could from me about desert tortoises. I did everything to help. All I hoped for was a ‘thank you’ or acknowledgement in the book. I had even hoped to continue posting updates of Buddy. But she talked for him, as if she had a continuing relationship. It’s sad now to think she’d rather go it alone than to share any of the credit with anyone. Oh, she will say she contacted me after she left, and she did actually! She sent me a copy of the book, along with money to return the things she left at my house when she walked out. Not even after I returned her things did I get an acknowledgement for doing that.
So, if you decide to purchase the book with my backyard on the cover, as you enjoy the beautiful pictures and paintings of my home, yard, feet, hand, handwritten updates, and Buddy, understand that the story is just fiction. It’s not about true friendship, or a helping hand (yes that's Buddy walking into my hand). I gave her my friendship and got rejected in the end. She writes Christian music too, but is this what a true Christian friend would really do? Maybe the lesson in this book is not about friendship or a helping hand, maybe it's about learning to walk away without even a thank you! How sad.
Wow!!!! Dee Emeigh demonstrates many talents with Buddy Comes to Breakfast! This is the type of book I love to buy my children because so much care is given to details. Her illustrations and photographs, both artistic works of the author, reflect her eye for detail and exceptional talent. Buddy's story is couched in a beautiful theme of friendship; and I appreciate that children have the opportunity to read a realistic story, in fact a true story, about animals while learning about the habits and habitats of the species. Mrs. Emeigh has created a masterpiece of children's literature! This is a book worthy of displaying on the coffee table and will be one you want to save as a keepsake for your children's children! Beautiful in every way!
Buddy Comes to Breakfast is a lovely three arts presentation of the beauty that can come from taking an interest in the simple things of life.

A narrative written at the middle school level tells of the a young desert tortoise and his life in the backyard and home of a friend of the author. A glossary and a page of links for more information are provided, and help expand on the scientific and human interest aspects of adopting the wild pet tortoise. Commentary and personal experiences also tell us much of the lifestyle of the desert, and add additional interest, especially for those of us who have never been west of the Rocky Mountains.

The poem that is added with about one line per page summarizes the story in words that can be understood by a two-year-old. To this reviewer, one of the most attractive features of the work is how the poem follows the story so closely that it enables one to recall the entire experience from memory by reading each line.

The 25 or so pages of pictures are quite remarkable. It is even sometimes impossible to tell which are the paintings done by the author, and which are the pictures taken with her camera. Whether painted or photographed, they are compellingly selected and arranged, and supplement the story to the point where the reader feels he is in the desert welcoming Buddy each morning.

The three arts working together create an experience that any child or even adult would find a true joy on a rainy day at home. Most importantly, the impact of reading the story, reciting the poem and/or looking at the pictures in order, reminds the reader of what wonder and joy can come from the simplest choice to observe the world with an openness to what each day can bring, and what we can each add to another's life, just by choosing to be a friend, as we go about the business of planning our own day, and being ready to serve breakfast.

Dee Emeigh is as talented an author as she is an artist! She has made Buddy come alive in word and breathtaking watercolors and photographs. This book was a delight to read and at the same time drink in her artistry. Much like graphic novels the reader will use both sides of the brain, reading and gleaning more information from the paintings and photos. This would be a tremendous addition to any library.
