I love reading Nothing With Strings, and I take the CD on the road. And that's the one flaw in this otherwise strong collection of struggles, foolishness, defeats and small moments of pleasant revenge.

On the CD edition, Bailey White is not the reader of these stories. And that's a flat out tragedy, because no one brings words to life or reads truer than Bailey White. Read these stories, and listen to them, as well. Bailey White writes with such a quiet voice that when you read her you can hear your heart beat. I can think of no other writer with her subtle brilliance. In this damned noisy world, it's beautiful to find a quiet voice that never flinches and whose aim in true.

The characters in Bailey White's stories are so well developed and interesting, I want to meet them. And I think if I spend more time in South Georgia, I may just get to do that! White is an accomplished writer, observer of human nature, topped off with a huge sense of humor. I've just discovered her stories and I can't get enough.Mama Makes up Her Mind And Other Dangers of Southern Living
The narrator sounds very much like Bailey White and is able to convey the ambiance of White's stories. I don't like the packaging. It's difficult to remove and replace the discs into the plastic jackets. Other albums have heavy cardboard folders with pockets or jewel boxes.
I do own all the others and like them. This one is similarly well written but many of the themes are much darker than the other work. If you're expecting to be consistently amused in the light-hearted vein of "Mama Makes Up Her Mind" you may not like this at all. This is closer to the darker side of life where a failed romance may end up with a huge brass statue planted firmly in your lawn as something between vengeance and art.
I adore her!!!! I love her words. What an underrated and amazing writer.
Bailey White captures the multi-layered, always entertaining, sometimes a wee bit eccentric personalities of the South like no one else! I absolutely love everything she writes!! This is a really fun read because each chapter is a story of it's own.
Our book club likes a short, light book for our annual Christmas luncheon. This one fit that bill. The short stories gave us short discussions—-between bites.
I have listened to several of Bailey White's tapes in the car, and found them entertaining, touching, and sometimes outright hilarious. She has a wonderful view of the world around her, and amazing skills as a storyteller. I was looking forward to this book being a source of heart-warming holiday stories, perhaps suitable for reading aloud at holiday family gatherings. However, that is not what I found as I began reading this collection of stories. Yes, they are wonderfully written. But each of the 4 stories I have read so far had sad, almost tragic endings. I felt cheated and angry at the endings. I'm not sure I will even finish this book. I will continue to be a fan of Bailey White, and continue to purchase books and tapes, but this one was a terrible disappointment.
