Lad A Dog Albert Payson Terhune Wendell Minor 9780517122860 Books Reviews
I first read this book almost 60 years ago on the recommendation of the librarian at the downtown Seattle Library. I was 10 years old then. I purchased this book for my granddaughter to read. She hasn't discovered it in her bookcase yet, but when she does, I know that she will love it just as I did those many years ago. I read all of the books that Albert Payson Terhune wrote and loved everyone of them, but this one was the first. I read it and reread it many times as a young boy.
This book is a hack job of the first magnitude. Sentences are broken up line-by-line. Every sentence is indented as though it was a paragraph. The typesetting is utter chaos, thus making this reprint unreadable. Shame on the (who is un-named anywhere on the book) for foisting this abomination on the public. I was excited to find this classic on , but am sorely disappointed with the product. Returning it.
I loved this book--and everything else Terhune wrote--when I read it more than 50 years ago. I still love his writing; he's a superb wordsmith, with a dexterity rarely seen in writers of books for young readers. As someone who grew up to be a writer too, I appreciate Terhune's skill more than I could back in the day.
Along with an appreciation for his writing talent, I've come to see other things that I missed as a kid. He writes lovingly about his collies, but comes across as elitist about other dogs. He endows his collies with a soul, but dismisses all other dogs as little more than worthless and stupid curs.
I've owned collies. I got them no doubt in large part because of all those Terhune books I'd read. I loved them. I've also owned other breeds, including no-breeds, acquired from shelters. Those dogs were, and are, every bit as intelligent and soulful as my collies.
Re-reading Terhune, I'm a little disillusioned by this new awareness of the author's disdain for most of the dog world. It's a little like going back to the town where one grew up and finding that it wasn't such a great place after all.
I bought this to replace the one I had. It had been read so much that it had fallen apart and pages were taped together. It is a timeless classic. I very much love this book. It is one of my favorites. I read it to my children many times. So I've had the first one for a lifetime almost. It is about a dog and is up there with "White Fang" in my opinion.
"Lad, a Dog" by Albert Payson Terhune was written in a past more genteel generation. It can be enjoyed by all ages of readers from older elementary grades through adult. I would especially recommend it for family reading where a parent reads to young children. There's no obscenity, no untoward activity, just love of a dog and the dog's devotion to his owner. This is a well written novel. Terhune builds his story based on his own pet, Lad, and observations of Lad's life. I first read "Lad, a Dog" as a youngster and ever since have promoted the reading of it to all who would listen. Lad is intelligent and demonstrates unusual qualities that leads him in rescues and other activities to the benefit of his master and his family. A new copy of this was purchased from to ship directly to my granddaughter.
This is a book I read among others of Terhune's books as a child and have remembered fondly for decades. I wanted to revisit the book to find out why it has held such importance to me all these years later, The author's residence "Sunny Bank" is now Terhune Memorial Park in Wayne New Jersey, which I plan to visit. Beloved childhood books should be reread ! There's so much more to them than we understood in our youth.
Great book. I read this when I was young and have always remembered it as one that stuck with me while multiple others didn't. One can't help but love this dog who seems too good to be true. Written long ago so there are words and phrases that would most likely be not understood by kids today, but it is good in that can broaden their vocabulary (if they look up the words or ask their meaning) and even if
they don't, taken as part of the sentence or paragraph may still be likely to get the close idea from it. And also the era this takes place in would not be the society/times we live in now but a window into the past of how people lived, talked, acted which is always interesting. I'm not sure if this book has been edited over the years as I remember it being thicker, more pages, but still a very good read for anybody! A classic.
